The Sherlock Holmes Look

The leading illustrator of Sherlock Holmes was Sidney Paget. He had obtained the job by mistake when the publisher sent a request for drawings to him instead of Walter, who was Paget’s younger brother and a well-known artist. Paget drew hundreds of pictures for Sherlock Holmes stories. He used Walter as his inspiration for Sherlock’s appearance. Other illustrators also drew, but he was the first who depicted Sherlocks with a long Inverness coat, a fitted cloth cap, and a pipe. That brilliant combination was recognized everywhere as Sherlock Holmes.
