Chapter 1

There was a man named Eugenides (Gen for short). He is an expert thief. He was caught for saying that he was going to steal the king’s seal ring and was sent to jail.

One day while he was sleeping on his stone bench, he was awakened by a sudden slam of the door. The king’s magus, who was one of the king’s most influential advisors, came to Gen and brought him to his study for a deal. This was the deal: if Gen could steal something that the magus wanted, the magus would free Gen from prison. But if he could not take it, he would remain in prison forever. Gen kept asking where and what the thing was but the magus didn’t answer. So, Gen had nothing to do but agree with the deal.

Chapter 2

The next morning, the magus came to Gen and released him from his chains. They walked outside and mounted on horses for traveling. There were five of them going on the trip. The five were: Gen, the magus, a soldier (whose name was Pol), and two slaves (who Gen called Useless the Elder (Ambiades) and Useless the Younger (Sophos)).

When they were halfway to Methana, Gen suddenly got tired and let himself fall to the ground. Pol was there beside him as quick as a flash and asked the magus what he should do with him. The magus replied that he should let Gen go to sleep while they eat their lunch.

When the sun was halfway down the sky, Gen woke up, and Pol, seeing that he was awake, grabbed him by the collar and hoisted him up the horse. They started moving again. At almost midnight, they stopped at an inn at Methana.

When they went inside, the owner’s wife said that she would not be letting Gen sleep in her clean beds. The magus gave her a silver coin and promised that Gen would wash immediately.

After Gen washed, the magus gave him clean clothes and went inside to eat dinner. Because Gen was so sleepy, he fell asleep on the table. Food still in his mouth.

Chapter 3

In the morning, Gen found himself on the floor in one of the rooms upstairs, chained to the leg of the bed. He went out of the room with pol and took another bath to wash the final prison dirt off.

After they ate breakfast, Gen got two more oranges from the table and stuffed them in his pocket. They trooped outside to get their horses and set off again. While they were moving Gen ate his oranges and waited for lunchtime to come. When they reached Evisa, it was late afternoon. The magus kept complaining that they should have arrived earlier. There is no inn at Evisa, but there is a woman that served food to travelers. Their lunch was made out of wrinkled olives, hard cheese, soft bread, and garlic yogurt. But Gen ate almost everything. They slept again in an inn at night, and Gen fell asleep on the table again. Everyone went outside and washed in the pump and came in back for breakfast, which was oatmeal and yogurt.

Chapter 4

They stopped early in the night and prepared to sleep on the grass while pol cooked their dinner. After some quizzes from the magus, Gen fell asleep. They reached a farmhouse before noon the next morning. Because they were behind schedule, the magus told them to wait until the following day. The only thing Gen did the whole day was sleep. He woke up to eat dinner and went back to sleep again. The next time he woke up it was breakfast time. They ate cooked oats, yogurt, bread, cheese, olives, and oranges. The magus told Gen to enjoy it because he won’t eat so well again for a while. After he ate, he walked outside and did some stretching while Sophos went to the stables to get their horses.

Soon, they reached a mountain and scrambled down their horses and proceeded on foot up-hill. When they reached the top, they stopped for lunch. Ambiades asked where they were and why they were there, and the magus answered that they were in Eddis. Then the magus asked what they knew about Eddis, and they took turns reciting what they knew about Eddis. The magus explained why they were in Eddis. They were in Eddis to get to a temple. Inside the temple, there was a stone called Hamiathes’s Gift. It was a stone that the gods dipped in the Water of Eternity. It was given to a king named Hamiathes, and the king hid it and died without passing the whereabouts to his child. Other people have looked for it, but the people never came back. The magus thinks that the people were poorly equipped. That is why the magus hired Gen to get it.

The next morning, they rode again through the trail and came to a vast, open space. They rode fast because of the fear of getting caught. Gen wearily walked to his sleeping bag after dinner, and lay on his back and listened to what the others were saying. Sophos asked about the gods, and the magus told the story about the creation of the first gods.
