The Civil War

China was divided into two political parties, – Communist and Nationalist.

  1. Communist Leader– Mao Zedong

  2. Nationalist Leaders– Sun Yat-sen and Chang Kai-shek.

Now it is March 12, 1925, Sun Yat-sen dies, and Chang Kai-shek becomes the leader. The first thing he did was to purge the Communists. But since Mao Zedong was a Communist, he left the nationalist party and established the Jiangxi Soviet. The Jiangxi Soviet is a place that has its own money, own tax, and their private bank.

Chang Kai-shek ambushed and forced Mao Zedong and 100, 000 of his army march 6,000 miles. Eighty thousand of them died. Some of the people called it the Long March. However, after the Long March, Mao Zedong was hailed as a hero by peasants. People despised the nationalist party because of the corruption, inflation, and the weak economy they were making, so the people went to Mao Zedong instead.

Japan attacks China. The Nationalists are forced to flee to the Communists. The Nationalists teams up with Communists to fight the Japanese. But after Japan surrenders, China splits again to finish the civil war.

Russia became happy when he saw that his neighbor turned Communist and helped Mao Zedong defeat the Nationalists. The U. S. A. thought that Mao Zedong was a good guy, so they helped also. Finally, in May 1949, the Nationalists give up. Chang Kai-shek and two million citizens flee to Taiwan.
