In 1492 the Turks were blocking the East Trade Route, the Europeans were looking for a new trade route. Christopher Columbus wanted to sail west to go to the east. He thought if you go to the west from Spain, he will reach Asia.

He asked King John of Portugal for money and some boats, but he just chuckled. Next, he went to Spain and asked King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. After 6 years, the war was over. They gave him 3 ships and 90, 000 men. The names of the 3 ships were, Pinta, Nina, and Sta. Maria.

When he arrived at Central America. He called the people there Indians and the place Indies, because he thought he had arrived at the Indian islands. He said that the people were easy to share the gospel to because they did not worship idols. He returned to Spain with jewels, cotton, and some indians as slaves.

After four years, Christopher Columbus sailed back to the indies. On December 5, 1498, the Sta. Maria sank. When Christopher arrived at the Indies, he fought with the indians and killed them. When he got back, he was put in jail for murder.
