Herbal Medicines

Updated: May 14, 2020

Herbs are plants that we use for therapeutic purposes sold as medicines, capsules, teas, extracts, and plants. People use herbs to improve their health. They also believe that if it is “natural,” it is safe. That’s not true! The safety depends on the chemical makeup, how they prepare it, and the dose (how much you take).

The power of herbs ranges from mild to robust. Mild herbs have subtle effects. Chamomile and peppermint are mild herbs. It is in teas, but it takes a Long time to have the full impact. Potent herbs, like Kava, have an immediate effect. The dose is essential in safety. Ex. Peppermint tea is safe, but peppermint oil can be toxic if misused.

The law does not require herb testing. People don’t need to test their herbs for safety before they can sell it. So scientific evidence varies widely. Scientists were able to evaluate some of the herbs, but more evaluation is needed. Scientists test the supplements for benefits and risks.

If you are thinking about using herbal medicine, first get information on it from reliable sources. Make sure to tell your health care provider about any herbal medications you are taking.

Fruit trees of all kinds will grow along both sides of the river. The leaves of these trees will never turn brown and fall, and there will always be fruit on their branches. There will be a new crop every month, for they are watered by the river flowing from the Temple. The fruit will be for food and the leaves for healing.” – Ezekiel 47:12b
