IEW Lesson 23, 24-Roosevelt, Churchill, and C.S. Lewis

Roosevelt, Churchill, and C.S. Lewis

Today we are going to study three men who saved millions of lives through difficult times.

The first man is Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was the American President while Hitler was taking over Europe. Because he wanted to help Britain, he sent money, supplies, and even ships! Sadly, the law forbids him to send soldiers to Britain.

He was a fierce, loyal, and honorable man. Franklin, who was interested in politics, was a determined student in Harvard. In 1921, he got Polio and was paralyzed from the foot to the waist. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, it stunned and enraged Americans. But now Franklin could send soldiers to help Britain’s Army and Winston Churchill.

The second man is Winston Churchill. When Churchill was a boy, he hated school, except for English. He loved reading and writing. His father was a politician at Britain’s House of Commons.

Winston decided to join the army. In the army, he had a lot of spare time. While the other soldiers played cards, he studied, read, and wrote.

In 1939, Hitler invaded Poland and Churchill was sent to the radio to broadcast what was happening in the war. Suddenly, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, and Winston had what he needed!  Because Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, he could now give the Americans soldiers to help fight! After the war ended in 1945, Winston Churchill continued to write. He won the Nobel Prize in 1953.

The last but not the least, is Clive Staples Lewis. When he was at the age of 4, wanted his name to be Jack. He enjoyed school very much especially translating Latin into English. He also learned Greek, French, Italian.

In 1916 he was in college. Because he was afraid to be sent to the war, he wanted to go to Ireland and wait there. But he stayed and did his duty. First, he was escorting troops to the training center. Then he found himself sitting in the trench in France.

When he returned, he published a book named Spirits of Bondage. Later, Jack founded The Inklings along with J. R. R. Tolkien. Everyone there is a writer.

These great men helped millions of people come through some of the most terrible events in world history.
