The Hobbit

Once upon a time in Middle-Earth, there was a wee hobbit living in a hobbit hole. A hobbit hole is a sizable house that has only one floor and is carved inside a hill. The hobbit’s name is Bilbo Baggins. One morning, a tall necromancer named Gandalf, came to visit him. He was wearing a gray cloak and a gray hat. He cordially greeted Bilbo, who was sitting on his front steps and smoking tobacco, but Bilbo just ignored him and dashed inside. Gandalf secretly etched a sign on Bilbo’s door and left.

The next night, 13 dwarves consecutively knocked on Bilbo’s door and entered uninvited. Bilbo was flummoxed with their arrival. After a while, Gandalf came and introduced all the dwarves with their king, Thorin, to Bilbo and told him their mission. They offered 1/14 share of gold if he will help them retake the castle in the Lonely Mountain from a dragon named Smaug. After that, the dwarves sang songs and danced around. Their songs made Bilbo sleepy so he walked to his bed and fell fast asleep. He woke up the next morning and looked around the house but could not find the dwarves. He sat down and started to have his breakfast thinking it was just a dream. Gandalf suddenly came and was surprised that he is still eating. He explained to Bilbo that there is a note under the clock saying that they meet him at the Bywater at 11:00 sharp. It was already 10:50 so the newly audacious Bilbo rushed out of the house leaving his half-eaten breakfast alone.

To get to the Lonely Mountain, they had to pass through the plains of Eriador, the Misty Mountains, and Mirkwood. They got into a lot of trouble on their way. There were menacing giants, wood-elves, huge spiders, rock giants, orcs, trolls, goblins, and wolves that they had to battle with. Because there were three, enormous, and strong trolls, these were the hardest to defeat. Their names were Bert, Tom, and Billy. The trolls took all of them to their camp which is surrounded by trees and rocks and planned to cook them. But Gandalf appeared from behind them and broke a rock that allowed the sun to come in. Since the trolls cannot live in the light, they became statues and the dwarves were free. The dwarves also argued a lot. They mostly quarreled about if they were going the right way or not.

There was a time when Bilbo freed the dwarves from the spiders. With his tiny sword, he cut the spider webs that were trapping them. When they finally got to the mountain, they looked for the keyhole to Thorin’s prosperous castle with the accursed dragon sleeping on top of the gold. Bilbo went inside and stole treasures. Smaug does not know where Bilbo came from. He can smell him but he cannot see him. He figured that the people from lake Town helped him reach the castle. He decided to get revenge on them. He flew to Lake Town and there was a person with a black arrow who shot it into a weakness in the dragon’s left waist. He read about the weakness in a book. The dragon emitted a loud roar and fell to the ground. Because of Smaug’s death, the Battle of the Five Armies (Goblin, Wargs, Elves, Men, and Dwarves) began, each army hoping to get gold from the castle. The Elves, Men, and Dwarves teamed up against the Goblin and the Wolves and eventually won. Thorin died during the battle from a spear wound. All Thorin’s companions and Bilbo mourned for a long time. Bilbo and Gandalf returned to Bilbo’s house just in time to stop his cousins from selling his things.

Because it is funny and full of adventure, I enjoyed reading the book. I delight in riddles, my favorite part is Bilbo playing riddles with Gollum.
