The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner Summary

There was a man named Eugenides (Gen for short). He is an expert thief. He was caught for boasting that he can steal the king’s seal ring and was sent to jail.

One day while he was sleeping on his stone bench, he was awakened by a sudden slam of the door. The king’s magus, who was one of the king’s most influential advisors, came to Gen and brought him to his study for a deal. This was the deal: if Gen could steal something that the magus wanted, the magus would free Gen from prison. But if he could not take it, he would remain in prison forever. Gen kept asking where and what the thing was but the magus didn’t answer. So, Gen had nothing to do but agree with the deal.

They traveled for a long time before they reached a temple in Eddis. The magus said that that the thing was a stone that the gods dipped in the Water of Immortality. After three nights of searching, he found the gem and went back to the magus, and they traveled back to Sounnis and presented the stone to the Queen of Eddis. The queen was happy and sent Gen away promising him not to put him in jail again.
