Escape from Monticello (The Virginia Mysteries Book 8) Summary

Updated: May 14, 2020

Derek and Sam are cleaning up Mr. Haskins’s(their neighbor) backyard when he calls them to help him in the garage. Mr. Haskins shows them a car that he drives before. He said it still works until now. Derek and Sam are moving boxes from the back of the garage to outside when Caitlin comes to pick them up for a picnic. Caitlin looks inside one of the boxes and finds books. Mr. Haskins said that Caitlin could bring it with her since her mom owns a bookstore. The next week, Sam goes to the bookstore to help sort the new books from Mr. Haskins. In one of the crates, they find a book that had all the letters that Thomas Jefferson’s granddaughters sent to each other. They read a part of it and discover that Thomas Jefferson has a secret compartment for storing secret books in his house. They find a loose page, and Caitlin keeps it in her purse. They leave the book on the counter beside Caitlin’s mom while they go and get lunch. When they get back, however, it appears that a red-haired college-girl stole the book. Derek, Sam, and Caitlin followed the piece of paper from Caitlin’s purse to Monticello. It leads them to a secret room that the sisters in the book called a cubby. They find another piece of paper, and Caitlin takes a picture of it using her phone before it disintegrates. They hear someone coming and quickly hide. The red-haired girl sticks her head in and spots Sam, but she does nothing. But when they are exploring Thomas Jefferson’s grave later, the red-haired girl approaches them and tells them that her name is Aubrey. She confesses that she stole the book and gives it back. She believes that they could work together to solve this case and gives them her number. When they got to Derek and Sam’s home, the three discussed what to do. They examined the photo of the paper and found a map of a kitchen that had the secret stash of books. The plan was to call Aubrey, and she can drive them to Poplar Forest to look for more clues. Sam, however, was not happy with the plan and angrily stomped upstairs. The next morning, Derek and Caitlin hop in Aubrey’s car and drive away. Sam is left in the house by himself because his parents had gone to a musical. Sam was able to get a look at the plate number of the car. GMLOGMD. Derek suspected that Aubrey was a doctor because there was an MD at the end. Sam was able to decode the plate number, but when he did, it was too late. Aubrey drove them to Poplar Forest, only to find out that the kitchen they were looking for was in Monticello. They drove back, but Aubrey had stopped at a stop and revealed that she was Jerry’s daughter! (Jerry was a criminal who was captured by Derek, Sam, and Caitlin, in their adventure to St. John’s Church a year ago, but he recently was released from prison. They drove to Monticello and trapped the children in a hole. Sam looked at a tracker that his mom had just in case they lost their phones. It said that Derek’s phone was in Monticello. Sam ran over to Mr. Haskins’s house and asked him if he could drive him to Monticello to rescue his friends. He agreed, but he ran out of gas on the way, and he had to run most of the way. When he arrived, he got a call from his dad and quickly told him what happened, and Sam’s dad was going to drive there immediately with the police. They arrived just as Jerry had escaped, but the police found him at the stop where Derek and Caitlin found Jerry. Aubrey also got arrested.
