Mystery On Church Hill (The Virginia Mysteries Book 2) Summary

Updated: May 14, 2020

Sam is on a field trip with his history class to go to St. John’s Church. Their teacher sorts them into groups of three. Sam’s partners are Caitlin and Billy. While they are touring the church, Sam leaves his group insearch of the bathroom. He enters a hut that he thinks is the bathroom. Sam trips on a rock and makes a lot of noise. He gets up and turns to run, but a man named Jerry stops him. Sam throws a rock at Jerry’s leg and escapes. He ran to the church and bumps into his partners. They hide under a pew, and the men pass by them. On the way back to school on the school bus, Sam tells Caitlin everything that happened. When he gets home, he also tells his brother Derek all that happened. The next Sunday, Derek was able to convince their parents to drive them back to the church. While their parents were watching a show, Derek and Sam snuck into the hut again to look for clues. They found something wrapped in paper in the ceiling just as the show finished. They decided to open it up that night. They hurried up to their parents and drove home. That night, Derek examined the bundle. Inside, there was a glass slide marked with dots. However, they could not figure out what it was. There was a message on the paper too. It was a letter from Thomas Jefferson to George Wythe. It said that there was a copy of the Declaration of Independence (first draft). It also was noted that the rectangular piece that they found is the key, and it should work with a device in George Wythe’s study. The brothers convinced their parents again to go to George Wythe’s house, which was in Williamsburg that weekend. It was easier to convince their parents because that is where their parents got married. In the house, the tour guide showed them the study and a device called a solar microscope. Derek, Sam, and Caitlin snuck back into the house later and placed their key into the microcope. It fitted perfectly. When the sun shone through, a map filled the ceiling. It was a map of the house. There was an X on the part of the map. Suddenly, Jerry showed up at the doorway. He locked the kids in a room, but Derek found a secret passage, and they were able to trap Jerry outside and bound him to a wheelbarrow. The police came with their parents, and Jerry sent to jail.
